Skip The Marketing Maze
Online marketing advice is like drinking from a firehose. Everyone will get into your face with their opinion, but no-one will hand you a towel. The result is bewilderment and a lot of “Shiny Object Syndrome” where the advertiser promises you unlimited leads in return for this “one-off low price…”
(Yes, I am a little cynical).
Now, most of the methods advertised will work for someone, somewhere. Cold calling, social posting, group work, SEO, direct mail - they are all ways for you to get in front of your audience so you can tell them about your business.
The trick is to find the method that feels most natural to you.
Now, I recommend email marketing because you get to control the information flow and keep the data, allowing you to communicate on your terms with your favourite people (your prospects and customers).
Never build on rented land
Picture this: Your Facebook account gets shut down overnight. Your LinkedIn vanishes. Someone hacks into your Instagram account, getting it suspended. As a result, your entire audience disappears.
What do you do next?
If you have your customers stored on a CRM, you can just email them and pivot to somewhere else. Owning your business data is your golden ticket to audience independence.
No list? Start in the next hour.
1. Create a Landing Pad (Your Digital Concierge)
You need somewhere to send people. This could be:
- A landing page (check out: https://carrd.co/)
- A booking form
- Even a quick video link
Pro Tip: Don't overcomplicate it. In fact, your landing page should have just one link where they sign up to your list.
2. Create an Irresistible Offer
Nobody wants another newsletter cluttering their inbox.
Your offer needs to:
- Solve a specific problem
- Provide clear, tangible value
- Hint at your broader business offering
Think of it like a first date. Make it compelling, or they're swiping left. 💁♀️
3. Choose an easy (and secure) email platform
Goodbye Excel spreadsheets! You don’t have time to do it manually and you want to stay on the right side of the data laws. That means you need a professional email platform that:
- Tracks subscribers
- Allows easy opt-outs
- Keeps data secure
The following platforms offer free packages and you can sign up in five minutes.
- Mailchimp
- ConvertKit
- Hubspot
- Klaviyo
- Brevo
Where to Find Your Audience? Everywhere!
Well, I wouldn’t recommend the middle of the Arctic, but if you can connect to other humans, you can find your audience. Marketing channels are limited only by your imagination:
- Podcasts
- Social Media
- Festivals
- Direct Mail
- Paid Lead Magnets
- Networking Events
Be genuine, be human
If you are not sure what to say - start there. We all know what it’s like to have nerves. In a year of over-hyped AI, being imperfectly human is the way forward. Quality trumps quantity every single time.
